The New World Screwworm (NWS) is one of the most destructive livestock pests ever encountered in North America. Once eradicated from the United States through an aggressive USDA sterile fly program, this flesh-eating parasite has re-emerged in Central America and Mexico and has become a growing concern for the U.S. cattle industry. Recent detections near and now within the United States have heightened concerns among producers, veterinarians, and government agencies alike.
What Is the New World Screwworm?
The New World Screwworm is the larval stage of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax. Unlike most maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on the living flesh of warm-blooded animals. Female flies are attracted to open wounds, branding sites, castration sites, dehorning wounds, navels of newborn calves, and other natural openings. They lay eggs in these areas, and once hatched, the larvae burrow into healthy tissue and begin feeding.
Infested animals often exhibit:
Swollen or infected wounds
Foul-smelling discharge
Reduced feed intake
Weight loss
Depression and lethargy
Secondary infections
Death if left untreated

Why Are Producers Concerned?
For decades, the New World Screwworm was considered a problem of the past. The USDA officially eradicated the pest from the United States in the 1960s through the release of billions of sterile flies that interrupted the reproductive cycle.
However, since 2022, the pest has steadily moved north through Central America and Mexico. USDA officials have responded by increasing surveillance, treatment programs, sterile fly releases, and import restrictions on livestock crossing the southern border.
On June 4, 2026, USDA confirmed a New World Screwworm case in a Texas calf, marking the first confirmed U.S. livestock case in decades and prompting immediate containment efforts.
